By now you will have an understanding of the 'rules' of art and deisgn - and you should be able to control materials to crate your own work. In this project we will look at how artists began to break the established rules and conventions of art to explore new ways of looking at the world.
what you will learn
- The importance of drawing from observation - why do we need to have actual physical objects in front of us?
- How Picasso and the Cubists changed the art world - and how their influence is still important today.
- That photocopiers are a useful tool in the art department - how to use them to quickly generate more work and ideas.
- Acrylic painting techniques - how and why they are different from watercolour paints
key words/terms
- CUBISM - an early 20th-century style and movement in art, especially painting, in which perspective with a single viewpoint was abandoned and use was made of simple geometric shapes, interlocking planes, and, later, collage.
- VIEWPOINT - the spot (point) from which you, the artist, is looking at the scene.
- STILL-LIFE - a drawing or painting that focuses on still objects. The subject matter is inanimate and never moves.
- COMPOSITION - The arrangement of elements within a work of art.
- VIEWFINDER - A useful device for framing a composition. It allows you to crop and frame a scene within a specific area. You can look through a viewfinder and move it around to find the most engaging composition.
- PRIMARY SOURCE - A primary source is one that you study directly from first-hand experience. Primary sources can be natural objects, artefacts, places, people or events.
