Your first project will introduce you to the department, your teachers and each other. Together we will find out what skills and knowledge you already have, discuss how important art and design is, develop our drawing skills and create work by looking at how we use the elements of art.
what you will learn
- Art doesn’t have to be a precious exercise – art can be realistic (that’s fine) but it can also be playful, messy, scribbly, enthusiastic, accidental, abstract, disruptive, misleading…
- To think carefully, observe sensitively and question often - How thick should this line be? How is this material different? What happens if I make marks without looking? How do I create a range of tones?
- A range of key skills – pencil shading, cross-hatching, monoprinting, tracing...
key words/terms
- ELEMENTS OF ART - The elements of art are the features included in an art piece that help the artist communicate. When analyzing these elements we are guided to a deeper understanding of the work.
- LINE - A mark made by a moving tool such as a brush, pen or stick. A moving point.
- VALUE - Degrees of lightness and darkness. The difference between values is called value contrast.
- COLOUR - Colour is created by light. There are three properties of colour; Hue (name), Value (shades and tints), and Intensity (brightness).
- SHAPE - A flat enclosed area that has two dimensions. Artists use geometric and organic shapes.
- TEXTURE - Describes the 'feel' of an actual surface. This can be real or implied.
- FORM - Objects that are three-dimensional; they have length, width and height. They can be viewed from many sides and take up space and volume.
- SPACE - Used to create the illusion of depth. Space can be two-dimensional, three-dimensional, negative and/or positive.

resources
Here are the resources we will use in this project - use them to recap what we have done in lessons, catch up on things you have missed or as part of your knowledge retrieval tasks.
